Roll the mouse over the images near the top of the page to see the different types of gas boilers, gas furnaces, and gas burners that we service or repair.
The images behind the pictures right above show a steam gas boiler that was over-sized which feeds into a small main steam pipe incapable of handling the Btu generated by this boiler (red color) thus causing a bottleneck. Couple that with piping for the header/Hartford Loop Equalization that was done incorrectly and what you have is a boiler with a shortened life span. We had to replace this boiler because it was already leaking water.

There are numerous areas and topic that involve gas heating. Combustion is one area of gas heating that is of prime importance. Proper combustion of natural or propane gas offer us comfort when it is used to heat our homes or businesses. However, incorrect combustion could be detrimental or fatal to us. A gas boiler, gas burner, gas furnace, or gas water heater not properly vented could produce carbon monoxide that could result in impairment, sickness or death. We are trained in the proper combustion of natural gas or propane gas for that matter.
Many installers of gas heating equipment are not properly trained in combustion and may only know one or two aspects of an installation. Their limited knowledge of gas heating may sometimes not show up right away but could drastically affect the performance and longevity of the equipment unbeknownst to you the owner. It might also become detrimental to your health. Examples of some of the items that could be detrimental to your health that even inspections may miss are: improper fuel to air ratio of the combustion due to gas burners being incorrectly installed or adjusted, dirty gas burner, gas orifices that are incorrect or too big, partially clogged heat exchanger, failure to consider the effect of improper draft occurring when one or more fans such as ventilation fans in bathroom, kitchen, or radon gas exhaust fans when they come on and it allows the back drafting of gas appliances and other heating equipment to produce levels of carbon monoxide that may not trigger the average carbon monoxide monitoring device.
Breathing continuous lower levels of carbon monoxide that is not readily detected by carbon monoxide detectors purchased from Home Depot, Lowe's or other retailers eventually accumulates in the bloodstream until symptoms of malaise develop. In the human body low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning may manifest itself as sexual dysfunction, headaches, altered mood, tiredness, etc; symptoms of a poisoned environment that are intertwined with other causes makes it hard to pin point or diagnose. This is why the knowledge of combustion is essential on installations of gas heat whether it is a gas boiler, gas furnace, gas burner, gas cooking stoves or gas water heaters.
Typical water heater inspections from a municipality or township may check for the spill tube length of the safety valve that is used when boiler or hot water tank pressure is exceeded, but are sometimes it is omitted on back-flow preventers that can have the same effect of boiling water coming out when under pressure and burns someone, gas pipe drip legs, gas pipe union after the shut-off valve, gas pipe shut off valve, size and angle of the flue pipe, electrical grounding of the hot and cold water piping, and/or water shut off valve, but this does not cover the area and importance of proper combustion as described above.
The proper installation of gas heating for homes and businesses cover not only combustion exhaust but also how the equipment itself is actually installed. You could have two gas boilers of the same size from the same manufacturer, installed in the same type of environment, with both passing City or State inspections, but could end up with differing performance levels and longevity. Rest assured that when we check your residence, commercial property, place of worship or organization for proper combustion of gas heat that it is deemed safe.
On gas boilers using atmospheric venting, the gauge of the flue pipe; consideration whether the chimney has a rain cap; use of black pipe below the water line on steam boilers; proper distance of header pipe from the water line on steam boilers; riser and header pipe compensation for movement for the constant reaction to heating and cooling; main pipes if more than one, is installed in the proper order on the header pipe; or the equalization piping not being installed correctly - any of these examples not done right could affect longevity and performance of the gas boiler being installed. For example: use of black steel piping below the water line on steam gas boilers promote the quick rusting of the return water and hence also the black steel piping used.
Installations of high efficiency gas heating could also be detrimental to your health if installed incorrectly. Orphaned water heaters is one area that are contributes to combustion problems because of a high efficiency gas furnace installation. Single PVC exhaust piping from high efficiency gas heating in cold areas such as in the Northeast is another contributor to combustion problems if ice forms and then causes carbon monoxide poisoning due to blockage.
Also when installing gas furnaces with air conditioning, a new set of rules are added on top of what already exist for combustion must be considered. Correct airflow and system charging is very important to gas furnaces with air conditioning. Not properly done, incorrect air flow and system charging affects efficiency, noise level, DE-humidification and comfort, and overall AC system performance aside from the heating aspect of it. Proper pressurization and evacuation on anywhere the refrigerant flows is also essential to long term performance. This is why you need an installer that could readily address all of these circumstances of gas heating with or without air conditioning.
At New Jersey Oil and Gas, sometimes it is these hidden things that we do and the customer is not be aware of that determines the added comfort and longevity to a system installation that goes onto each and every installation that we do. Knowing that “The Spirit of Excellence is in Everything That We Do” is sometimes our only gratification, but it is enough for us.
